Day 1:Hanoi - Mai Chau - Son La

Drive from Hanoi to Maichau then Sonla

The journey northwards begins as we depart Hanoi and pass through the undulating terrains of tea plantations and the many timeless villages linked to the road which is the main artery of trade between the northwestern region and the capital city. This is our first glimpse of rural Vietnam and sets the tone for the days ahead. Depending on road and traffic conditions our drive will deliver us to Son La by mid or late afternoon. After checking into our hotel we take a walk around this mountain town. There is little traffic on roads and many Black Thai in traditional costumes are busy going in all directions.

Mai Chau

Mai Chau is an attractive destination not only to international tourists to Vietnam but to domestic travelers as well. The idyllic valley of Hoa Binh Province offers great day trips from Hanoi on the weekends, especially when it’s only 130km away. You’ll find yourself getting lost in the nature with green forests, gentle hills, and stilt-house villages. Come to Mai Chau is to come to a laid-back northern village of Thai people, to be a part of a culture, a way of life so different from where you’re from. Mai Chau is indeed the place for those who seek peace of mind, a scenario without the bustling urban noises and come back to what are basics to human’s happiness – beautiful nature and friendliness of the people.

Day 2:Son La - Dien Bien Phu

After visit Sonla, we will move to Dienbienphu to learn more about the history here

Son La, was once the site of French penal colony in which anti colonial revolutionaries were incarcerated. Visit the Old French Prison and museum before depart for Dien Bien Phu. You'll enjoy the picturesque scenery as you pass the villages of Black Thai, White Thai, Meo and Muong peoples. The winding roads cross over the Pha Din Pass before reaching Dien Bien Phu, the site of the decisive battle in Vietnam’s struggle for independence in 1954. After checking into our centrally located hotel we enjoy a walk around to see this fast growing town. Our main stop is Dien Bien Phu’s Museum which details the event in place. We also pay a visit to the old battle field where the lush vegetation now grows over many of the war relics including old French tanks and artillery pieces. Overnight in Dien Bien Phu.

Heading out of the town, we spend a full day traveling into Vietnam’s most mountainous region. The roads are difficult at times, but the spectacular landscape with a mixture of terraced fields and hill villages makes the hardship all worthwhile. On the way, we have some opportunities to encounter the Red Hmong, Kho Mu, Mang, Dao people who still retain their age old cultural traditions and are recognizably distinct from each other by their dress. We arrive in Sapa by late afternoon and have time strolling around to catch our first glimpse; a small town surrounded by breathtaking mountains. Overnight in Sapa.

Day 4:Trekking Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van

Trekking downhill to ethnic villages in Sapa, Y Linh Ho village and Lao Chai village

Morning: You will enjoy breakfast at hotel
9:00 Local tour guide will pick up you at the hotel and start trekking. We start the day trekking through the beautiful Muong Hoa Valley to Y Linh Ho village, home to Black Hmong minorities. Weather permitting you will enjoy stunning views across the valley with mountains and rice terraces as far as the eye can see. Next on the route is a stop at Lao Chai, an established Hmong minority village that has been inhabited for centuries.
15:00 Come back to hotel then take a rest, free and easy in the afternoon

After breakfast we continue venturing into northern Vietnam, traveling through the Chinese border town of Lao Cai to the colorful Sunday Market at Muong Khuong. This market also attracts a wide variety of ethnic minority groups including the Variegated Hmong, Dao, Phu La, La Chi, Tay who still retain their age old cultural traditions and are recognizably distinct from each other by their dress. The experience of this congregation is unique. Upon leaving Muong Khuong, we drive to Bac Ha. As an option we can embark on a walk during the afternoon, visiting the Hmong King’s former residence and Ban Pho where the villagers make the potent local maize wine. Overnight in Bac Ha.

Colorfull Weekly Market in Bac Ha

Bac ha Market Nestled in the northern hills of Vietnam exists one of the best ethnic markets in all of Southeast Asia! On Sundays, the ethnic minorities from the surrounding villages and hills come by foot, by motorscooter, by horse, and by water buffalow for their chance to socialize, eat, drink, smoke, get a haircut, and buy produce and meat for the next week. It is a blur of colorful plaids and stripes.

Day 6:Bac Ha - Hanoi

Enjoy the last day in Bacha before go back to Hanoi

The return journey begins as we depart Bac Ha Town and pass through the verdant and rugged mountain scenery to Hanoi. These back roads are a great way to explore the real Vietnam. We see very few other travellers, mostly rural dwellers who are just as interested in finding out about our lives as we are of theirs. The drive is very long, but we can make many stops along the way to stretch our legs and take some wonderful photographs. Tour ends in Hanoi.

From the moment we were picked up, we knew we would have fun. Great sense of humour, great with all the family. And what a tour. We did a customized package with contact initially from the Facebook page and then via WhatsApp. What we wanted to do was not part of the tours but they managed to fit it in. Great food.
